Baroque Gems: A 7-Day Flute Challenge
Level: Beginner–Intermediate
Estimated time: 10–20 minutes each day
Develop your Baroque playing through seven beautiful pieces.
This challenge is an opportunity to encounter gems of Baroque music by notable composers from the German, French, and Italian Baroque traditions. You will broaden your repertoire and improve your phrasing, ornamentation, and interpretation.
Days 1–3: Germany
Learning: harmony and structure, ornamentation, rhetoric, and emotion.
Days 4–5: France
Learning: dance, elegance, character, and ornamentation.
Days 6–7: Italy
Learning: drama, phrasing, momentum, and virtuosity.
Each day you will receive a new piece to study. Although the pieces are suitable for beginners, more advanced players will enjoy exploring Baroque style through phrasing, feeling the harmony, ornamentation, and the differences between the various Baroque traditions.
Beginners can simply enjoy the challenge of learning a new piece in one day, which is quite enough in itself. You can leave out some of the ornaments if they are too challenging at the moment.
More advanced players can take on the Extra Challenge each day by playing all the ornaments and adding or altering ornamentation and articulation.
Try to stay within the suggested time frame. Once you have finished reading each day's text, spend 10–20 minutes crafting the piece. You may find it more rewarding to focus on a few phrases rather than the whole piece and refine them within the time frame.
This challenge will open the door to the beauty and richness of Baroque music.
You’ll receive daily emails during the challenge, and information about new challenges, 4 times a year. No spam. Unsubscribe anytime. For more details, review our Privacy Policy.
