Vibrato—what an exciting, and also controversial, subject.
I can’t think of many topics that spark more emotional debate in our little flute world. It’s deeply personal and so interesting. It's also one of the most important aspects of flute playing.

So, welcome to this week. Over the next 7 days, you’ll explore and develope your vibrato. This challenge combines methodical and technical work with musical interpretation.

Your goal for the week
To improve your technical control of vibrato, expand its range and speed, and refine its nuances—so you can apply it express in a variaty of ways.

There are many traditions, schools, and aesthetic approaches to vibrato. Rather than dictating you what is “right” or "wrong" I’ll expose you to recordings from great musicians across styles and traditions, and leave the artistic choices to you- the artist.

A slightly different approach

We’re often told to “sing on the flute”.

But this time, we’ll take a different angle: we’ll draw inspiration from string players. Their vibrato is visible, physical. Listening to great violinists, cellists, and violists, will help us gain new insight and apply it directly to your playing.

Structure

Each day begins with a vibrato warm-up, followed by the “main dish”: a piece of gradually increasing difficulty from the string repertoire.

What if I can't play vibrato well yet?
This challenge will help you with ecercises which are helpful both for intermediate level and more advanced players can enjoy them too.

What if I miss a day?
No problem. Continuity is important, but you can always pick up where you left off if you need to stop or repeat a day.

Do I need sheet music?
No—everything will be provided.

What do I need?
Just your flute, a tuner, and a metronome.

Is this a replacement for lessons?
No. This reflects my personal approach and is meant to support your playing—not replace working with a teacher. If anything, it should make your lessons more effective.
