A 5-Day Flute Challenge
Level: Intermediate–Advanced
Estimated time: 15–20 minutes each day
Discover the history of the French Flute School through five beautiful pieces and archive recordings of some of its most influential flutists.
The French Flute School has shaped the way we play the flute today. We will explore the people, the history, the sound, the idoms of this fascinating tradition through the music, ideas, and recordings of some of its most important figures, from Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert to Marcel Moyse and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
Each day, you will receive a new piece from the French repertoire, a little historical background, and a specific musical idea to explore in your own playing.
Each day includes historical recordings to listen to, ideas to experiment with, and a piece to practice.
Some of the pieces are more challenging than others, but you don't need to master an entire piece in one day. You can choose a few phrases or a short section and explore the day's musical idea in your playing.
Try to stay within the suggested 15–20 minutes. The goal is not necessarily to learn five complete pieces, but to discover new possibilities in your playing and become more familiar with this wonderful tradition.
I hope this challenge will inspire you to listen, experiment, and bring something of the French Flute School into your own playing!
