Deconstructing and reconstructing a masterpiece

This 8-day program guides you through deconstructing and rebuilding one of the most familiar works in the repertoire. Through analysis and focused practice, you’ll revisit the first movement with fresh perspective—moving from structural, harmonic, and melodic understanding toward a more confident interpretation with emphasis on audition preparation.

In the first half, you’ll break the piece down through detailed analysis; in the second, you’ll pick up the pieces and reconstruct the exposition into a cohesive and polished performance.

What is the goal?

In most auditions, you’ll be asked to start the audition with the first movement’s exposition. So in this challenge we will focus on that. You can, of course, apply this process to the entire concerto.

How well should I know the piece?

Some of you may already know it very well, others less so.
The challenge will guide you through a process of inspecting the piece from many angles. I think a sign of a masterpiece is when you discover new things every time you study it.

Do I need to know music theory?

A basic understanding of harmony and principles of musical form will be very helpful, though healthy instincts and a good ear could go a long way in compensating for lack of knowledge.

You will need-

• A score of the Concerto- piano score and an orchestral score (you can find both on imslp)
• A metronome and tuner
• A recording device (your phone is good enough)
